DOWNES; Charles Downes arrived here on 20 December 1851 aboard the Rodney 2 from Queenstown, Ireland. He is shown as being a free settler. On 13 February 1872 he was found guilty in the HSC of Rape and sentenced to Life (a commutation). He arrived at CSG from Port Arthur on 17 April 1877 with most of the remaining Port Arthur convicts. He was listed, as being 60 years of age and his warrant number was 865. Downes was a shepherd, Protestant with three or more prior convictions and could read and write. He died at CSG at 7:35 a.m. on 1 August 1878. (Cause Unknown.) |
